Healthy older adults, randomized, placebo-controlled (39 patients, 12 weeks). Men and postmenopausal women aged 45–74 took 2,000 mg/day of a bioavailable curcumin formulation or placebo. Forearm blood flow response to acetylcholine — a direct test of resistance-artery endothelial function — increased 37% with curcumin (p=0.03) but not placebo. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation increased 36% in the curcumin group (from 4.4% to 5.7% dilation, p=0.001), with no change in placebo.
Postmenopausal women, three-arm trial (32 women, 8 weeks). This trial directly compared curcumin ingestion against aerobic exercise training and a no-intervention control. Flow-mediated dilation increased significantly and to a similar degree in both the curcumin and exercise groups, with no change in the control group — suggesting curcumin's effect size was comparable to a structured exercise program over the same period.
