Why does light exposure matter here?

One of the more actionable findings comes from a study of sleep-restricted adolescents: exposure to short-wavelength (blue-toned) light shortly before or around waking measurably enhanced the size of the cortisol awakening response compared to dimmer light conditions.4 A separate study found the CAR itself follows a robust circadian rhythm that persists even when researchers controlled for prior sleep and behavior, and noted that shift workers who wake at unusual circadian phases may have a blunted CAR — possibly leaving them less equipped to respond to morning stressors.5
