Turmeric vs. Ginger for Inflammation: What a Head-to-Head Trial Found

Short answer: in the one trial that tested them head-to-head, turmeric and ginger performed equally well — neither was superior. Both are kitchen spices with a long history of anti-inflammatory folk use, and both have accumulated real randomized trial evidence in the last decade. But direct comparisons are rare. The best one we could verify comes from an unexpected setting: COVID-19 outpatients.

What happened in the one real head-to-head trial?

Saleh et al. (2025), a triple-blind randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports (PMID 40841392), enrolled 144 COVID-19 outpatients and randomized them to turmeric, ginger, or placebo — three 500 mg tablets daily for five days. The researchers tracked four inflammatory markers: CRP, ESR, LDH, and white blood cell count. Both turmeric and ginger significantly reduced CRP and ESR compared with placebo (p<0.001), and critically, there was no significant difference between the turmeric and ginger groups (CRP: p=0.263; ESR: p>0.99). Neither herb moved LDH or WBC counts. The authors’ own conclusion: “turmeric and ginger exerted equivalent anti-inflammatory effects.”

So why do people treat them as different?

Because outside that one trial, most of the research studies them separately, for different conditions. Curcumin’s strongest human evidence is in osteoarthritis joint pain and general inflammatory marker reduction. Ginger’s strongest human evidence is for nausea (particularly pregnancy-related and chemotherapy-related nausea) and, more recently, some osteoarthritis pain relief. A preclinical study (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022) found that combined ginger and turmeric extracts showed synergistic inhibition of inflammatory mediators like TNF and IL-6 in lab cell models at a specific 5:2 ratio — an interesting mechanistic clue, but it was conducted in cultured cells, not people, so it should not be read as proof the combination outperforms either herb alone in humans.

What won’t this combination do?

The COVID-19 trial ran five days — it says nothing about long-term joint or metabolic effects, and its inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR) are general infection/inflammation markers, not disease-specific outcomes like joint function scores. Neither turmeric nor ginger is a substitute for medical care in an active infection or for a chronic inflammatory condition that needs diagnosis.

Dosing and timing

The head-to-head trial used 500 mg tablets, three times daily. That is broadly consistent with doses used in other curcumin trials covered in our curcumin dosage guide. Ginger dosing across the broader literature ranges more widely, often 500–2,000 mg/day depending on the study and formulation.

If your question is “which herb is stronger,” the fair answer from the best available head-to-head data is: they are roughly matched on general inflammatory markers. The more useful question is which symptom you are targeting — nausea leans ginger, joint pain leans turmeric, and general anti-inflammatory support has evidence for either.

What does each herb’s standalone research look like?

Turmeric/curcumin’s standalone case rests mainly on osteoarthritis and general inflammatory-marker trials — we cover that evidence in depth in our curcumin for joint pain review. Ginger’s standalone case is built on a different foundation: it has a long track record in nausea research, including trials in pregnancy-related nausea and chemotherapy-induced nausea, plus a smaller but growing body of osteoarthritis trials, including one randomized controlled trial that compared a turmeric-ginger-black pepper combination directly against naproxen (a common NSAID) for knee osteoarthritis, measuring prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), an inflammatory marker, over four weeks. That trial adds a third data point beyond the COVID-19 study: it also points toward turmeric and ginger being used together rather than as strict alternatives, mirroring what the cell-culture synergy research suggests.

There is also a meaningful difference in how each herb is generally tolerated. Ginger is more likely to cause mild heartburn or GI upset in some people at higher doses, particularly on an empty stomach, while turmeric’s most commonly reported side effects at high supplement doses tend to involve digestive discomfort and, rarely, interactions with blood-thinning medication — covered in more detail in our turmeric side effects article. Neither profile should be treated as a reason to avoid either herb for most healthy adults, but it is a practical consideration if you are choosing between them for daily use.

What if you only want the nausea benefit, or only the joint benefit?

It is worth being specific about your actual goal before shopping, because “turmeric vs. ginger” products are often marketed as interchangeable general wellness spices when the underlying research supports fairly different use cases. If nausea — whether from motion sickness, early pregnancy, or chemotherapy — is your primary concern, ginger has a longer and more specific track record; a curcumin supplement is not a well-evidenced substitute for that particular symptom. If ongoing joint discomfort is your primary concern, turmeric/curcumin’s trial base, covered in our joint pain review, is the more directly relevant body of evidence. If your goal is genuinely general — supporting a lower overall inflammatory baseline without a specific target symptom — the COVID-19 trial’s finding of roughly equal CRP and ESR reduction suggests either is a reasonable starting point, and personal tolerance or taste preference can reasonably decide between them.

One more practical note: because both herbs showed effects on inflammatory markers within days in the COVID-19 trial, that timeline should not be read as typical for chronic, non-infectious inflammation. Trials measuring joint pain outcomes, by contrast, generally run 8–12 weeks before showing meaningful change — a much slower timeline that is worth setting realistic expectations around before you start either supplement for a chronic issue rather than an acute one.
