Short answer: this pattern is almost always about timing, not fuel. Why am I exhausted in the afternoon?
Two processes govern when you feel sleepy. The first is sleep pressure: a molecule called adenosine builds up in the brain the longer you’re awake, and the more it accumulates, the sleepier you feel. By early afternoon you’ve been awake long enough for it to register. The second is the circadian rhythm — your roughly 24-hour internal clock — which has a well-documented dip in alertness in the early-to-mid afternoon, independent of lunch.

So why am I wide awake at night?
Here’s the part that confuses people. If adenosine is high by evening, shouldn’t you be sleepiest at night? You would be — except the circadian system fights back. In the few hours before your usual bedtime there’s a circadian “wake maintenance zone,” a period where the clock actively promotes alertness. If your clock is shifted later than your schedule (a common pattern), that alert window lands right when you’re trying to wind down.
Constant-routine laboratory studies that strip away outside cues find that evening types reach their melatonin and core-temperature markers two to three hours later than morning types, and their subjective sleepiness can be shifted even further Lack L, et al. The timing gap is real and measurable. In controlled conditions, the difference between chronotypes wasn’t imagined — melatonin onset, body-temperature minimum, and self-rated sleepiness all tracked later in evening types Lack L, et al.
But the honest counterweight: chronotype research also finds that objective daytime performance often doesn’t differ much between morning and evening types, even when subjective sleepiness does Taillard J, et al. What this pattern won’t be fixed by
A later-running clock is a timing problem, and timing problems respond to light and schedule, not to stimulants or supplements alone. No pill resets your circadian phase. What actually helps the timing
Get bright light early. Morning light is the strongest signal for nudging a late clock earlier; aim for outdoor light within an hour of waking. Keep your wake time fixed, even on weekends — a consistent wake time anchors the whole rhythm. Cut caffeine off by early afternoon so it isn’t blocking adenosine when you actually want to sleep. And dim screens and overhead lights in the last hour before bed, since evening light pushes the clock later, the exact direction you’re trying to avoid.
