Does Turkey Actually Make You Sleepy? The Tryptophan Myth, Checked

Short answer: no — and the biochemistry runs in the opposite direction to the myth. Turkey does contain tryptophan, tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin and melatonin, and that chain of facts is where the story usually stops. What it leaves out is that tryptophan has to compete for entry into the brain against a crowd of other amino acids delivered by the same meal, and it loses. The post-dinner slump is real. The bird is not responsible for it.

Does turkey even have unusual amounts of tryptophan?

It does not. Tryptophan content in turkey sits in the same range as chicken and beef, and cheddar cheese contains more per hundred grams than any of them. Nobody blames a cheese sandwich for narcolepsy. If tryptophan concentration were the mechanism, the effect would show up across every high-protein food, at every meal, all year round.

Why doesn't the tryptophan get where it needs to go?

Tryptophan crosses into the brain through a transporter shared with a group called the large neutral amino acids — leucine, isoleucine, valine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and methionine among them. The transporter has finite capacity, and it does not prioritise tryptophan. In fact, tryptophan is one of the least abundant amino acids in dietary protein, so a protein-rich meal floods the bloodstream with far more competitors than tryptophan itself.

The counterintuitive consequence is that eating pure carbohydrate does more for brain tryptophan than eating turkey does. Carbohydrate triggers insulin, insulin drives most of the competing amino acids into muscle tissue, and tryptophan — which is largely bound to albumin and so partly shielded from that clearance — ends up with a better ratio and easier access. The mashed potatoes and the pie have a stronger claim on your drowsiness than the meat does.

So what is actually making you sleepy after a big meal?

  • Volume. Large meals produce a postprandial dip in alertness that scales with how much you ate. This is the same effect behind the mid-afternoon slump after a heavy lunch.
  • Carbohydrate load and the blood sugar swing. A large, rapidly-absorbed carbohydrate load can be followed by a fall that leaves you flat.
  • Alcohol. Wine or beer with the meal is straightforwardly sedating in the short term, and disruptive to sleep quality later on.
  • Circadian timing. Holiday meals often land in the early afternoon, which coincides with a natural dip in circadian alerting.
  • Everything else about the day. Early start, travel, hosting, alcohol, and often a poor night before. Sleep debt does not need a biochemical excuse to express itself.

What human studies actually show about tryptophan

Supplemental tryptophan does something — at doses food cannot deliver. Sutanto, Loh and Kim published a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression in Nutrition Reviews in 2022, collecting eighteen articles and pooling data from four. Tryptophan supplementation shortened wake after sleep onset, with an effect of roughly 81 minutes per gram and a standardised mean difference of −1.08 (95% CI −1.89 to −0.28). Participants taking a gram or more had markedly less wake time after sleep onset than those taking less.

But the same analysis found nothing else moved. This is the part that usually gets dropped. Tryptophan supplementation did not significantly affect total sleep time, sleep latency or sleep efficiency in the pooled analysis. The finding is narrow: less time awake once asleep, at a dose of at least a gram, taken in isolation.

The counterweight is the meal itself. The dose matters enormously here. A large serving of turkey might supply somewhere in the region of a gram of tryptophan, but it arrives inside roughly a hundred grams of mixed protein — which is exactly the condition under which the transporter competition is at its worst. The trials that found an effect gave isolated tryptophan, without the competing load. Food and supplement are not interchangeable here, and treating them as such is the central error in the myth.

What this won't explain

If you are reliably exhausted after every meal, not just holiday ones, the tryptophan story is not the explanation and neither is normal postprandial dip. Persistent post-meal sleepiness can accompany blood sugar dysregulation, and heavy daytime sleepiness in general warrants a look at whether your nights are actually restorative. It also will not explain sleep onset problems. Nothing in the tryptophan literature suggests it helps you fall asleep faster — the meta-analysis specifically found no effect on latency. If getting to sleep is the problem, sleep pressure and timing are the more productive places to look.

Should I eat turkey before bed to sleep better?

There is no evidence supporting it, and the transporter competition argues against it. A large late meal is more likely to disrupt sleep through reflux and thermal load than to improve it.

Does warm milk work for the same reason?

Milk is often cited for its tryptophan, and it runs into precisely the same problem: it is a protein source, so the competing amino acids come along too. Any benefit is more plausibly about ritual and warmth.

Is a tryptophan supplement worth taking?

The meta-analysis suggests at least a gram is needed for the wake-after-sleep-onset effect, and it found no benefit for falling asleep. Tryptophan and 5-HTP both act on serotonin pathways and can interact with serotonergic medication, so this is a conversation to have with a clinician rather than a shelf decision.

What about kiwifruit, tart cherries and other sleep foods?

Those have their own small trial literature, which we looked at separately in the kiwifruit research. The same applies to a spoonful of honey before bed, where randomised trials exist but were run in coughing toddlers. The evidence is thin but at least it exists, which is more than can be said for turkey.

Why does the myth persist?

Because the first two steps are true. Turkey does contain tryptophan and tryptophan is a serotonin precursor. The myth survives by omitting the step where the amino acid has to actually get into the brain.
