Why isn’t the strongest melatonin the best?
Because melatonin is a timing signal, not a sedative, and overshooting your natural night-time level doesn’t improve sleep — it just lingers into the next day. Your body produces only about 0.1–0.9 mg at its overnight peak, so even a 1 mg supplement already exceeds physiology. The classic MIT study found a 0.3 mg physiological dose restored sleep in older adults at least as well as 3 mg, while the higher dose pushed melatonin to abnormal levels and caused next-day carryover (Zhdanova et al., 2001). And in the pooled trial data, the average benefit — falling asleep about 7 minutes faster — held across doses, with higher amounts mainly adding side effects (Ferracioli-Oda et al., 2013). Can you trust what’s on the label?
Often, no — and this is the single most important thing to understand before buying. Because melatonin is regulated as a supplement, not a drug, the FDA doesn’t pre-approve dosage accuracy or purity. Independent testing has exposed how loose that gets.
The 2023 JAMA gummy analysis is the headline finding. Researchers tested 25 melatonin gummy products sold in the U.S. Only 3 of the 25 contained within 10% of their labeled melatonin amount; the actual content ranged from 74% to 347% of the label. One product contained no detectable melatonin at all — just CBD that wasn’t prominently disclosed (Cohen et al., 2023). If you can’t trust that a “3 mg” gummy contains 3 mg, the dose conversation becomes meaningless.
It wasn’t a one-off. An earlier Canadian analysis of 16 melatonin brands across tablets, capsules, liquids, and chewables found actual content ranging from about 17% to 478% of the labeled amount, with the widest swings in chewables (Erland & Saxena, 2017). The takeaway across both studies is the same: the format most marketed to consumers — especially gummies and chewables — tends to be the least consistent.
The label-accuracy reality

3. The right format. Standard tablets and capsules tend to be more dose-consistent than gummies, per the testing above. Extended-release formats aim to help with staying asleep but can increase next-day grogginess in some people; immediate-release suits sleep-onset problems. Avoid products that bundle in CBD or undisclosed extras unless that’s specifically what you want.
4. A clean, transparent ingredient list. Fewer mystery “proprietary blends” with undisclosed amounts; clear labeling of every active ingredient and its dose. If a sleep formula combines melatonin with other botanicals, you should still be able to see how much melatonin you’re getting.
5. An honest brand. A manufacturer that frames melatonin as a modest, short-term tool — rather than a miracle cure — is signaling that it respects the science. Overblown “cures insomnia” language is a red flag in a category the FDA doesn’t police.
Does the form — gummy, tablet, or liquid — matter?
It matters more than most people expect, mostly for consistency. Gummies and chewables are the most popular and the most pleasant to take, but they’re also where independent testing has found the largest deviations from the label, and they’re the format most implicated in accidental pediatric ingestions because they look and taste like candy. Tablets and capsules are less fun but generally more reliable. Liquids let you fine-tune a small dose. None of these formats changes melatonin’s fundamental behavior — absorption is similar — so choose based on dose accuracy and how easily a format lets you take a genuinely low amount.
What the “best” melatonin won’t do (and when to see a doctor)
No melatonin product — however well-made — will reliably keep you asleep through the night, cure chronic insomnia, or fix sleep disrupted by an underlying condition. Melatonin’s strongest evidence is for falling asleep faster and for circadian problems like jet lag, and clinical guidelines still place cognitive behavioral therapy ahead of it for ongoing insomnia. There’s also a recent safety signal worth weighing: a large 2025 observational analysis presented at the American Heart Association tied long-term melatonin use to higher heart-failure and mortality rates in people with insomnia (Nnadi et al., 2025). It’s preliminary and can’t establish cause, but it points the same direction as the rest of the evidence — the “best” way to use any melatonin is short-term and low-dose. How should you use whichever product you choose?
